Fairtrade is one of the most successful social change stories of recent times. From being the preserve of a committed few, the FAIRTRADE Mark is now recognised by three out of five people, and appears on thousands of food, drink and clothing items as well as other goods. In this decade alone, the value of Fairtrade sales has grown more than tenfold reaching over £700 million in 2008. Through Fairtrade, millions of people working in certified producer organisations feel more secure and in control of their lives.

But for all this remarkable progress, we still have a long way to go to make trade fair. Two billion people - a third of humanity - work hard to support themselves yet still struggle to survive on $2 per day or less. The challenge now is to take this successful model and scale up the reach and impact of Fairtrade so that it can begin to truly transform trade in favour of the poor and disadvantaged.

The workshops will give a broad overview of Fairtrade, the international Fairtrade system and the standards. It will also look at consumer demand for FAIRTRADE Mark products and give an insight into its commercial partners and their commitment. In addition we will look at Fairtrade sales figures and the impact of the recession.

By the end of the workshop you will understand the people behind the FAIRTRADE Mark and the value that it brings and give you the ability to bring Fairtrade to life within your own organisation and encourage positive change.

The session will be interactive and will give you the opportunity to meet someone from The Fairtrade Foundation’s commercial team. You can ask any burning questions that you may have about Fairtrade, get examples of how Fairtrade works in practice and gain ideas on how you can get involved.

•Understand the business case for selling FAIRTRADE Mark products and realise how profit and principle can go hand in hand.
•Learn about businesses that have made the commitment and learn about their experience of getting involved.
•Learn about the impact of Fairtrade and importance of the FAIRTRADE Mark.
•Work together to grow demand for Fairtrade and enable producers to gain greater access to the market.
