New Artisan’s Market Launch in George Street Hove, Sussex.

by Deborah Miarkowska

George Street in Hove is about to witness the launch of the first Sussex based, Artisans market. Common Cause, the co operative set up to support sustainable and local produce, have been seeking out the finest local artisans available and are delighted with the results.

They have operated a market in George Street for a few years now, but the huge range of good food outlets available to the residents of Hove have seen a downturn in customer turnout over the last few months. Time for a re think and the task of revitalising the market was given to Vanessa Langley who co ordinates the incredibly successful Farmers Market in Lewes on behalf of Common Cause.

‘A brainstorming session around the kitchen table led to plan of supporting local business in the area and offering a unique experience to the residents, by creating Gorgeous George Street. Often unable to offer pitches to craftsmen at Lewes due to the very strict FARMA accreditation system and lack of physical space, here was our opportunity to welcome even more local makers under our wing.

So now as well as enjoying the best local food produce from the likes of nationally renowned producers like Bookham Fine Food, and Gourmet Game, you can also indulge your love of arts and crafts with beautiful pieces for the home from the talented hands of potter Mohamed Hamid, of The Star Gallery, textiles from Susanna Alce, Ashdown Forest ’s shepherdess, gorgeous oak furniture from Illuminated Designs, stained glass and garden mosaics from Mandy Openshaw and why not adorn yourself with stunning jewellery from a myriad of talented jewellers like Emma slater, Anita Watson, Alexis Dove and Angela Jenkinson.

There will a local butcher, a baker and even a natural candle maker plus cheese makers, plant nurseries, fruit producers, and fishmongers and to make the whole experience even more tempting, a locally reared hog will be roasting on the spit, keeping your appetite sated, plus freshly cooked curries, gorgeous cupcakes locally made preserves and divine fruit vinegars from the award winning Stratta. Along with the Musicians and Street performers it all makes for a brilliant way to spend a Saturday morning

Over 30 local businesses will be out in force on Saturday April 24th for the first of 6 monthly events teach one held on the last Saturday of the month. The event begins at 10.0am and goes on until 2pm.
