MACS in Malawi an uplifting story

MACS in Malawi an uplifting story

by Deborah Miarkowska

Despite the heavy downpours, we set off winding our way through the Sussex countryside last saturday evening, to a talk from two inspirational speakers from MACS, Sally Huband and Eileen Eggington, both volunteers from the Malawi Association For Christian Support.

Their work shown to us in an uplifting sixty minute film, is both commendable and life changing to those people living in Malawi, where MACS support. It is stories like these that EcoChic Magazine seeks to celebrate and campaign for.

All about MACS

kids-in-malawi-macsMACS works with people in Malawi to improve their quality of life, especially those living in rural areas. It responds to requests from schools, health centres, hospitals, HIV/AIDS projects, church congregations, community projects and women’s work.

The Warm Heart of Africa

Malawi, known as The Warm Heart of Africa, is one of the poorest countries in the world but its people are well known for their generous spirit.

A few comparable facts bring home the true reality:

  •  life expectancy is thirty-seven compared to UK Seventy-nine.
  • Only 25% boys and 23% girls attend secondary school
  • Adult literacy is approximately 64%
  • HIV/AIDS prevalence is 14% of the population.
  • The number of orphans in Malawi stands at 950,000

healthy_poultrymalawivaccinatorMACS has shown an incredible ability to respond to these needs and recent projects have included a fifty four bed girls’ hostel at Malosa, repair of classrooms and new buildings and houses for teachers (at a cost of £4000.00 each).

Water supplies have been secured to a number of areas in Malawi, including boreholes at Mtonda and Dedza and repairs to the dam at Malosa that provides water for st Luke’s Hospital, Malosa.

Valuable health projects include a mobile dispensary for Kabuwa and Mgoza, a 4×4 vehicle ambulance and bicycle and new strong mattresses. Alongside this there has been support given to student Nurses, much needed drugs and lab equipment, grants to orphan care groups and HIV/AIDS & family planning workshops organised by the mothers union.

This success story goes on and on, but it is only achieved through the support of generous donations and legacies. Read more about the inspirational story behind MACS and please donate today. MACS current campaign is to provide 9000 mosquito nets and to continue the much needed building work of schools and hospitals and to support the many thousands of orphans throughout Malawi.
