Leblas Design Diaries
by Deborah Miarkowska
We are delighted to bring you the latest in our Design Diaries from Arabel Lebrusan, jewellery designer and founder of the design led ethical jewellery boutique Leblas.
Just last week, Arabel was invited to speak at Warwick University’s Fashion Week. Here she tells us her story.
I had the great privilege to play host to an event during Warwick University’s Fashion Week 2010, which took place from the 1st to the 5th of March, 2010, lasting a total of 5 spectacular and very educational days!
Warwick University is famous for educating future leaders and entrepreneurs using highly qualified professionals from a wide range of industries. The Warwick Fashion Week was perfect as it created awareness and informed the young minds of issues that impact the eccentric fashion industry today, including ethical issues, such as global warming and animal cruelty, and the importance of how craft heritage influences today’s modern design and creativity.
I was speaking on Thursday, Day 4, where I informed students about the unethical behaviors of jewellery sourcing and products, as well as the value of keeping traditional craftsmanship alive. My audience was full of ambitious and open minded students from different professional backgrounds - some were philosophers and others business gurus, which was great because it created very diverse conversation. They all had their opinion and commented on how shocked they were at the realities and dangers of the mining industry on the environment, which they weren’t aware of. They also felt inspired by the filigree artisans and Spanish traditional heritage, which are the forces behind Leblas’ designs. I brought in an amazing bespoke filigree bracelet to show them fine detailing and delicacy of the design.
I was joined by many other influential designers, including a fellow Spanish designer Elena Garcia, who was giving her lecture on “Conscientious Haute Couture” the same day as I. Her work and personality inspire me, as she is full of life and energy!
Overall, it was a great day for all.
Love, Arabel
