Fashion Victims: Making Style Sustainable Conference, University of West of England. Friday 26th February 2010.
Millions of people are employed in garment factories around the world and million sof people like us wear these clothes, unaware of how these products reached us. We are sold the idea that we can have cheap clothes and expect that the people making them are gettign a fair deal. The truth is that faster and cheaper clothes often lead to abuse and exploitation of people and planet. When money is tight cheap clothes offers you a chance to make our cash go further. But for most, the fast fashion phenomenon tempts us to buy more than we need for as little as we can, which niether workers or the planet can afford. This needs to change.
A conference for 14-18 year olds school and college students and their teachers from textiles, art, design, technology, business studies, economics and geography departments, mainly around the South West. The day will be lead by educators on sustainable fashion will explore organic textiles, fair trade and garment workers’ rights. You’ll find out more and teachers will also gain ideas for bringing the issues alive in the classroom. You’ll also be able to meet people that make our clothes’.
This conference is organised by Fashioning an Ethical Industry (Labour Behind the Label) and the Cotton On Team, Soil Association, Bristol Fair Trade Network, Bishopston Trading Company and hosted by the University of West England.
Speakers include our very own EcoChic Stylist Tara Starlet, Blood, Sweat & T Shirts, Liz Parker, Fashioning An Ethical Industry, Jenny Foster, Bristol Fairtrade Network, George Williams of Bishopston Trading, Lyla Patel, TRAID, Tamsin Lejeune, Ethical Fashion Forum.
Lunch is not provided, but Fairtrade and organic snacks will be available.
