Safia Minney celebrates Organic Fortnight

Safia Minney, Founder & CEO of the fabulous People Tree records her latest blog posting, it was too good to miss, so just in case you haven’t seen it…

Organic Fortnight is here. And there’s some good global news including that the Indian government have stepped up their support to organic cotton ten-fold. This is good for the planet and its people.

At People Tree we’re particularly pleased with this acknowledgment giving pioneered supply chains for Fair Trade and organic certified cotton and manufacture. People Tree products were the first to be certified to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) and carry the Soil Association mark for a product made in the developing world.

Kamal Nath, India’s Minister of Commerce also opened a People Tree Fair Trade and organic fashion show in December 2005 at the WTO Fair Trade Fair in Hong Kong.

Recently the Evening Standard ran the negative headline about organic food - I felt that we’d lost the plot. After all, we don’t buy organic food to lengthen our lives - well I’ve never felt that that was the lure - more that it promotes sustainability and respect for the land, farmers and animals. After all, no study accompanied the negative headlines about the impact of pesticides on planet and health and the sustainability of the production of oil based pesticides.

Organic agriculture is literally bringing the spring back to the farmers step. Nature composts make the soil bouncy where as conventional fields are hard underfoot. Farmers are benefiting enormously by organic as ecosystems are rebuilt, indigenous plants are rediscovered to improve they range of food they eat and in the case of People Tree’s partners it adds 20% more cash to farmers pockets along with social benefits.

Eating and wearing organic has certainly kept the spring in my step too - I’m never sick!

A 10% discount is currently being offered to celebrate  People Tree at London Fashion Week.
